Cannoli & Friends 6 to 8 May 201 1 . Sweets and Culture Festival in Piana degli Albanesi (PA).
Ground of strong tourist attraction is the cannoli, sweet pianioto universally known. His culinary secret is stored in the wafer (shkorça) of flour, wine, and salt, which is filled with sieved sweetened ricotta and chocolate chips.
The event will consist of cultural and gastronomic meetings, workshops, conferences and debates that will see the protagonist, of course, the cannoli, tasted in conjunction with the products Sicilian food and wine quality.
For the duration of the event there will be a big point of tasting in which the public can buy the famous cannoli of Piana by buying a ticket for the price of 1.50 €.
Free tasting workshops are planned, during which there will be a discussion on specific products and techniques for preparation of some Sicilian sweet specialties.
The history of the cannoli
The cannoli is now part of the iconography as well as in food history. It has centuries of history, but its origins remain shrouded in legend. It is said that the birth of cannolo took place in Caltanissetta, the old "Kalt El Nissa", "Castle of women", home to numerous harem Saracens.
The emir's favorite, to pass the time, seems to devote to the preparation of delicious dishes and, in particular, of sweets. Another source, however, tells that the cannoli were prepared for the first time in a convent near Caltanissetta.
It is said that during Carnival, the nuns "invented" a cake featuring a wrap ('a scorcia) prepared with flour, eggs, lard and sugar. We try to "marry" the two legends at the end of Arab rule in Sicily, the harem is empty.
